CFW Statement on the 33rd Annual Luncheon
September 18 2018

(September 18, 2018) – As you may know, hotel workers are currently on strike at 26 hotels around the city, including the Hyatt Regency, where Chicago Foundation for Women is holding our 33rd Annual Luncheon + Symposium today. We wanted to provide our supporters with some insight into why we made the very difficult decision to continue with the Annual Luncheon and provide you with information about how you can support the hotel employees.

Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) supports the right of workers to organize collectively for fair working conditions. We recognize that many of Unite Here Local 1 members are the very women we are committed to serving and investing in. We have expressed our concern to the management at the Hyatt Regency and urged them to swiftly resolve the strike.

CFW initially chose the Hyatt Regency for our event because we support union employers. Unfortunately given the timeline, we were not able to secure another venue that could accommodate the size and needs of the luncheon, which seats 2,000 people. CFW relies on the Luncheon for roughly half of CFW’s annual grants to nonprofits serving women and girls.

Chicago Foundation for Women completely understands and respects the wishes of members of our community who choose not to attend the event.

Unite Here Local 1 has let us know that there are several ways you can make a gift to support workers and their families during this time. For more information, Unite Here requests that you contact them here.

Whether you attend the Luncheon or not, we truly appreciate your support for Chicago Foundation for Women and your investments in health, safety and economic security for Chicago-area women and girls.

We remain committed to being here for all women and girls, no matter what, until we are equal.
